Most rating sites let you give everything ten out of ten. Rate a few hundred films and the number stops meaning anything.
RateMovies caps every band. Ten films at 10★, twenty at 9★, thirty at 8★. If a film doesn't belong in your top ten, it probably shouldn't get a 10.
When a band is full and you want to add something, one film has to drop a star. The app shows you five from that band and you choose. Don't like any of them? See another five. Nothing worth demoting? Then your new film takes a lower slot instead.
The result is a Top 250 built from ratings that cost something, rather than a popularity contest.
A film's RM rating isn't a straight average. Until enough people have rated it, the score is blended toward the overall average — so one person's 10★ lands near nine, not at ten. That stops a single enthusiastic rating from topping the chart.
Only theatrical feature films qualify: no shorts, TV movies, or documentaries.
